Interests

Teaching - I teach basic textiles, textile and apparel evaluation and graduate polymer studies. The basic class provides our students with the fundamental knowledge necessary for professional activities in many of the career paths our students take. This knowledge is a benefit to them initially in some entry-level positions and again when they achieve decision level status in companies dealing with textiles. The evaluation class provides the student with a general understanding of performance measurement using standard methods and an understanding of the statistical nature of quality assurance. This knowledge is transferable to any product related field. The graduate classes provide a knowledge base for textile science graduate students.

Research - My research interests range from fundamental polymer chemistry to product evaluation, clothing comfort and human sun protection properties of clothing. My work in sun protection is both a research and an outreach endeavor through the development of standards as well as being a proponent of use of sun-protective clothing for the prevention of skin cancer.

Outreach - I participate in textile and clothing standards making organizations such as American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC) and provide technical assistance for the textile and clothing industry.

Selected Research Projects

Selected fabrics are being analyzed for UV transmittance properties as well as other performance factors. The construction parameters will be correlated to performance in an effort to give some guidance to textile and clothing companies or retailers in the selection of fabrics for designation as sun protective.
