It is the student's responsibility to initiate the application process for the HDFS undergraduate internship, and only students who have declared the HDFS major can initiate the application process.  With the guidance of his or her designated faculty advisor, the student prepares the Application Form two semesters in advance of the internship experience.  Early application is necessary in order to guarantee that prerequisite requirements are met and to give the student adequate time to identify an appropriate internship placement.

Specific guidelines for the internship application process are as follows:

1.     Ideally, students will begin to explore an internship track with their designated faculty advisor by the middle of the sophomore year.  Early identification of a track will give students an opportunity to strategically select professional elective courses that meet their professional interests, and to develop a timeline for meeting the internship prerequisites.

2.     By the end of the first semester of the junior year, students should meet with an advisor from the College of Human Sciences in 266 Spidle Hall to complete a Senior Credit Check.  The credit check will help ensure that the student is on schedule for meeting the academic internship prerequisites and the requirements for graduation.

3.     Two semesters in advance of the semester the student expects to complete internship, he or she should:

·         Attend the Mandatory Internship Orientation Meeting, and

·         Meet with his or her faculty advisor to complete the Internship Application.  The student must bring a copy of the Senior Credit Check to the meeting with his or her advisor.

4.     Finally, the student should submit two copies of the Internship Application, Senior Credit Check, and Fingerprint/Background Check Clearing Letters to the Internship Director by the established deadline.

·         If the student has not yet received Clearing Letters, he or she may submit proof that the Fingerprint/Background Check application has been mailed.  Acceptable proof is a copy of the original application along with copies of the postage and money order receipts.

·         Students will not be allowed to begin their internship until the Internship Director has received copies of the ABI and FBI Clearing Letters.
