The Event

The College of Human Sciences at Auburn University launched the International Quality of Life Awards (IQLA) in 1994 in conjunction with the United Nations International Year of the Family. Since its inception, the awards ceremony has been the annual occasion for the College to honor those people and partnerships that have made significant contributions to individual, family, and community well-being locally and around the world. The laureates demonstrate a strong commitment to empowerment through public policy and educational programs to enhance quality of life. At the heart of their professional success lies a true concern for the human condition - an inspiration to us all, but particularly to our young people throughout the world. Past honorees include: Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu of Capetown, South Africa; Madeleine Albright, former U.S. Secretary of State; Don Logan, Chairman, Media and Communications Group, Time Warner; Lawrence Klein, Ph.D., Nobel Laureate in Economics; Catherine Bertini, Executive Director, United Nations World Food Programme; Ratan Tata, Chairman, Tata Group, India; and Dr. Normal Borlaug, 1970 Nobel Preace Prize Laureate & founder of the World Food Prize.

The College of Human Sciences at Auburn University

The College of Human Sciences at Auburn University is a premier academic program whose mission is to enhance human well-being by studying the relationship between people and their environments. Blending its land-grant mission with a rapidly changing information age, the College is at the forefront of innovative research, corporate/government/university partnerships, and outreach programs that offer science-based solutions to address society’s most pressing issues. With its outstanding faculty scholars and its rigorous academic curricula that bridge the arts and sciences, combine theory and application, and integrate global understanding with technical competence, students are prepared to address the challenges of the new century and are committed to improving quality of life worldwide.

The Opportunity

Today’s global economy requires that universities provide leadership for the preparation of world-class graduates. The success of this educational effort is contingent on having faculty and students who are knowledgeable about the world, and programs that integrate global awareness and social responsibility with technical competence. To help meet this goal, the College of Human Sciences established the Fund for Global Understanding. This fund underwrites the International Quality of Life Awards and serves as a source of financial support for the College’s international programming initiatives.
