A Whole New World

18 September 2006 A Whole New World

Even though I have been in Italy for less than a week, I feel like I’ve been here for months and feel like I belong here. I’ve discovered many differences that exist between this country and the U.S. These differences are not necessarily good or bad, they’re just different. And I’m enjoying experiencing a totally new culture with its unique customs. Food service is one aspect of Italy that is different. Servers do not continually fill empty glasses, and the bill is not presented unless requested. However, once seated at a table, that table is mine for as long as I wish to stay; I love being able to sit and enjoy the company of the girls I’m traveling with without being rushed. And although the food preparation may take longer than in the U.S., everything is made with fresh ingredients and made right after it has been ordered. Also, Italian people are extremely warm and welcoming. Everyone that I have interacted with so far has made me feel comfortable and special. Several days ago, a group of us encountered four older Italian women at Castel Gandolfo while both groups were taking pictures. We invited the women to be in a picture with us, and after it was taken, they hugged us and spoke in Italian to us and between themselves, smiling and laughing. Even though we didn’t understand anything they said other than “Bella, Bella,” there was a warm feeling that was felt between all of us. They kissed us on our cheeks before we parted ways; I think we made their day, and I know that they added something special to our trip. I’ve taken numerous classes in Auburn on marketing, and although marketing is everywhere, aspects of it are quite different here in Italy. I took a class on Services Marketing last fall and learned ways to improve customer service. But in Italy, customer service in relation to the food and retail industry is not as emphasized as it is in the U.S. This is not a bad thing because this country seems to be doing well by focusing on other aspects of life. Family and relationships seem to be a high priority of the people here in Italy, and I think that is great! I know I will learn many things from Italians over the next three months that I can take home with me to make my life well-rounded.
